Meet Boonyen, an art student in Bangkok with a passion for painting and animals. For years, she has been painting portraits of homeless animals around her city. Through the selling of her paintings, she raises money for medical expenses and pet food while also hoping the exposure of sharing the paintings on social media can help lead to finding her furry friends a permanent home. She helps care for street animals by taking them to the vet for vaccines, to be neutered, and for any other needed services. Boonyen makes homemade pet food and goes around the city every night to feed the same homeless animals she’s spent her days painting. She has already taken in 3 strays—the limit allowed in her apartment. Her dream is to one day start her own pet rescue and adoption center on a large piece of land with lots of room to roam and play!
“Wait, but there aren’t any words. What’s going on here?”
These videos are a challenge to practice empathy over sympathy. A tool to help us all move closer and closer towards a deep desire to truly understand one another: to understand the struggles and the beauties, the seemingly mundane and the wildly exciting, the differences and the deep similarities. A foundation to help us unravel the challenges we face at a personal, societal, and universal level — and to think creatively about ways to create a more peaceful, interconnected world together.
How does a wordless video do all of that? It doesn’t. It’s a tool to spark our wonder, curiosity, and desire to empathize. A starting place. We as humans get to do the rest.
