When American Xenii Nielson first came to Guatemala in the 1990s, she was alarmed by the number of abandoned dogs on the streets.

Intent on doing something about it, she helped found Animal AWARE, the country’s first animal shelter.

Three decades later, Xenii, her husband Martin, a few paid staff, and volunteers try to care for more than 350 dogs, and 60 cats in the not-for-profit shelter.

But the near constant stream of stray dogs dropped at their gate, combined with their no-kill philosophy, has tested the shelter’s capacity to rehabilitate animals and get them out the door for adoption.

I filmed at AWARE for a few days in late 2017 / early 2018, and recently decided to edit some of the footage together. I hope it gives you a glimpse into the challenges Xenii and the “critters” face.
