In late April, 2018 I found a dead dolphin. He was laying on a beach the next town over to me and was already in a state of decay as he was quite far away down the coast from any civilization, about an hours walk from any houses or shops.
I went home that night and thought about this dolphin lying on the beach, his life and how he died. I knew that I wanted to do something in honor of him, but I wasn’t quite sure what. I just knew that I wanted it to be respectful and a tribute to the life that this beautiful mammal had lived previously.
The next day I returned with my family, we all said a prayer around the animal I now call Rodney and for lack of a better term, we chopped his head off his body. I said sorry to him, that I hoped he was in peace and asked that he forgive me for what I was doing.
I shallowly buried him in my garden, as I wasn’t sure what to do next. Although, I knew that one day I would know what to do and this is what leads us all here. The skull in this story has been through a lot of care, attention, cleaning, and preserving.
I did not know Rodney in his life, but in his death I have learnt a lot from him. Respect for living creatures and care and attention.
