The Prodigal Pig – 01/01/2017 AM – 2 Peter 2:20-22
No one wants to be called a pig or a dog because anyone who knows these animals knows just how true this proverb is. That they are domesticated, or not wild, makes them familiar to us, one a farm animal, the other a pet. We’re around pigs and dogs, in agriculture or even as part of our family, some actually allowing dogs to live in our houses. Strange!
Of course, the Lord doesn’t actually have something against pigs and dogs but is using them to illustrate how some people are fake Christians or fake followers of Christ and regardless of the pious act they put on, eventually prove they are unsaved or unspiritual.
First, let’s all admit that even as a Christian, that we still have a sinful nature and still struggle with different types of sin, partial disobedience to what God says to do, or wrong attitudes. But being a sinner is not what Peter is talking about, for the Lord Himself made it clear in Luke 18:10-14 that a sinner with a humble and repentant attitude can be right with God.
No, St. Peter is describing fake spirituality to help us understand why some leave the faith, to warn us against being influenced or impressed with those who talk a good game but are really just hypocrites and Pharisees like the ones in the passage in Luke 18, and lastly to encourage the true believer to live godly life.
There are many types of prodigal pigs!
