This was heavily inspired by the work of Goats of Anarchy, a US sanctuary for special needs goats founded by Leanne Lauricella. Her love for these animals goes so deep that she won’t give up on any of them, no matter their condition or amount of legs.
Following GOA’s work through various social media channels has made it ever more clear to me that the herd animals we traditionally use as livestock are among the most socially intelligent ones out there. Many people view them as nothing but brainless milk and meat machines when this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Disclaimer: There were many factors at play that made herd animals our go-to choice for food and clothing. But one of them certainly was that they made it easier for us than their predator counterparts, being more naturally trusting and less prone to violent behaviour. Centuries of breeding and domestication only made them more docile and dependent on our care.
I feel that it is our duty as “the crown of creation” as we like to call ourselves, to lead by example, use our big brains and treat everyone with love and respect, be it human or animal. While it may have been necessary for us as a species to kill and use animals to survive up until some decades ago, that is not the cause today – at least for the vast majority of people on earth. Our growing demand for meat and dairy products makes cruel systems like factory farms inevitable. Every day, we shred baby chickens. We separate calves from their mothers. We confine animals in spaces so tiny they can’t turn around. It really is hell on earth. But we could easily stop all this suffering.
Even if you don’t care about animals at all – the majority of people on earth switching to a plant-based diet is vital if we want to preserve this planet for future generations. So let’s take responsibility. It’s about time.
A BIG THANK YOU to my mentor Mathijs Luitjen for his guidance through this whole project and my classmates Anuarite Kamau, Jake Ittel, Jon Burroughs, Matt Bero and Moira Garrovillas for all their input and cheering me on.
Thanks once again to my previous mentors Steve Savalle and Nidia Dias for their continued support.
And finally to Michael Jones for founding MoGraph Mentor – I am beyond grateful for everything this experience has given me.
There are lots of wonderful organizations and sanctuaries working tirelessly to end factory farming or provide abused farm animals with a better life. Please donate to help them continue their hard work.
